100 Mile & District Outriders

Ambassador Contest Criteria

I. Basic Criteria and Winning Requirements

  1. This contest is open to boys and girls that are between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age (all ages are January 1st) and live within a 50 kilometer radius of 100 Mile House. Contestants need not be members of the 100 Mile & District Outriders.
  2. All contestants will be based on the following four part criteria; the top scoring participants will become the 1st Ambassador and 2nd (Runner-up) Ambassador for 100 Mile & District Outriders. In order to keep participation at the highest level, the top two participants must score at least 75% on the Ambassador Contest Evaluation in order to win.

II. Ambassador Contest Evaluation

  1. Oral Presentation (15%)
  2. This speech is to be written on a topic chosen by the Committee Head and presented by the contestant at a luncheon hosted by the Outriders Club, and is open to all who wish to attend. Speeches during the presentation will be timed and must be at least 2:00 minutes long, but cannot exceed 4:00 minutes. Contestants will be judged based on oral evaluation sheet out of 180 (Appendix A). The speech topic is described on the Ambassador entry form.

  3. General Knowledge (10%)
  4. Each judge will ask two questions of contestants after the completion of the Basic Equitation Pattern. One question will test the contestant's knowledge of horse anatomy, and the other will focus on general stable management.

  5. Attitude (25%)
  6. This will be based on the contestants' enthusiasm, friendliness, approachability, cooperation, etc. with the other contestants and organizers, as well as how they handle and treat their horses throughout the competition. A question regarding sportsmanship will also be asked of the contestants after the completion of the Gymkhana Event. Since this part of the Evaluation is the most important, any ties will be determined by the contestant who scores the highest in this category.

  7. Equitation

This consists of four elements that comprise various disciplines:

    1. Basic Equitation Pattern (20%)- this will consist of all three gaits and allows contestants to demonstrate the use of proper leads. Contestants will be judged on how well their horse responds to their cues, as well as their overall execution of the pattern. The pattern shall be completed in Western riding style.
    2. Gymkhana Event (10%)-contestants will be judged in one event as chosen by the Committee Head and is based on the rider's control and correctness. It does not have to be done with speed.
    3. Open (15%)- contestants will be able to demonstrate their equitation skills in English or Western riding style (rider's choice). Contestants will show their horses at a walk, trot/jog, and canter/lope, and will be evaluated on their ability to control the horse as well as their overall performance
    4. Flag Bearer (5%)- contestants will proceed around the arena at a jog carrying the flag, while demonstrating enthusiasm and control.

  1. Awards
  2. The Ambassadors shall be awarded gifts as sponsored by the community. These prizes include an engraved belt buckle, as well as gift certificates sponsored by local businesses. Should a non-member(s) win the contest, a junior Outrider's membership will be awarded to them sponsored by the Outriders Club. If an Outrider Club member(s) should win the contest, then the value of a junior membership shall be awarded at a Club function as desired by the winning member.

  3. Ambassadors' Responsibilities
  4. The two participants that become the 1st and 2nd Ambassadors shall be representatives of the 100 Mile & District Outriders. The Ambassadors' main duties include, riding in the Little Britches Rodeo Parade, riding in the Grand Entry of the Little Britches Rodeo, as well as being present for the majority of the Rodeo day, competing in at least two club sponsored events of their choice (i.e. Rodeo, gymkhanas, or horse shows), attending the Outrider's year end awards banquet, and finally being present the following year to crown the new Ambassador. Their appearance and conduct must be appropriate when their presence is required. The inability to fulfill these duties will result in forfeiture of the Ambassador title and crown. The Outrider's Executive Committee will govern all final judgments regarding forfeitures.

  5. Judges
  6. The Ambassador Contest Committee shall choose all judges. Preference will be given to Outrider Club members who have the necessary skills to judge various parts of the Ambassador Contest Evaluation and who do not have a direct personal interest in any contestant. The oral presentation usually consists of two judges, while three judges evaluate the equitation.
